“Aged Care: The Safest Place For the Elderly Right Now”

The past week has seen the Australian people affected by new government restrictions as a result of COVID-19. These new restrictions are affecting our ability to care effectively care for ourselves and family. Also, with the continuation of panic buying, access to essential products and services is becoming limited. The demographic who is being most affected by all of this is our elderly.

For the elderly who are unable to care for themselves, aged care is quite possibly the safest place for them at the moment. Aged care facilities follow strict infection control protocols and are able to make sure they receive uninterrupted access to medication and supplies. Aged care facilities are increasing hand sanitation, limiting visitors and non-essential personnel to the facility, temperature testing all staff and visitors, increasing food hygiene and serving protocols and limiting events and gatherings within the facility.

Co-founder and CEO of Aged Care Decisions, Ken Ray said: “One of the signs that a loved one may need 24/7 care is when they are having multiple hospital visits each month.”

“Moving non-critical older people out of hospital to aged care will be key to how our hospitals cope with this crisis. It is also safest for our elderly to remain in environments were visitor restrictions and infection control procedures are being closely followed,” said Ken Ray.

Now is the time to make sure our elderly loved ones can adequately care for themselves. Can they get access to food, supplies and medications? Can they limit their amount of access with the people – including family members – and still take care of themselves? These are the questions that we need to be asking at such an uncertain time. Aged care facilities are well versed in infection control and have procedures in place that aim to keep families safe and is quite possibly the safest place for our elderly right now.
