The Benefits of Choosing a Home Care Provider Experienced in Veterans & DVA Care
Veterans and war widows often have access to specific supports through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, including Veterans’ Home Care, household services and personal care. Many veterans also access mainstream aged care through the Support at Home program.
However, each funding pathway has its own processes, approvals and service expectations. A provider unfamiliar with DVA requirements or veteran-specific needs can cause delays, confusion or gaps in care.
The practical benefits of a matched provider include:
- DVA process knowledge: Understanding of DVA approvals, service limits and reporting requirements.
- Consistent, reliable care: Carers familiar with DVA standards and expectations for service delivery.
- Support for complex health needs: Experience assisting veterans with chronic conditions, mobility issues or service-related health concerns.
- Respectful, person-centred care: An understanding of the importance of dignity, independence and choice for veterans and their families.
Aged Care Decisions connects you with providers who understand these requirements. By matching you with teams experienced in veterans and DVA care, we help ensure services start smoothly and continue reliably.

Common Veterans and DVA Home Care Services We Can Connect You With
Veterans and war widows can access home care through two main pathways, depending on their DVA card type, service history and assessed care needs.
DVA-Funded Home Care Programs
If you hold a DVA Gold or White Card, you may be eligible for DVA-specific home care programs:
Veterans’ Home Care (VHC) provides:
- Domestic assistance (cleaning, laundry, household tasks)
- Personal care (showering, dressing, daily routines)
- Home and garden maintenance
- Respite care (in-home or residential short-term relief)
Household Services and Attendant Care may be available if you have accepted service-related conditions under MRCA or DRCA. These can include help with cleaning, shopping, meal preparation, lawn mowing and gardening.
DVA programs have their own eligibility rules, service limits and co-payment arrangements.
Support at Home
Veterans and war widows can also access Support at Home, the Australian Government’s aged care program for people aged 65+ (or 50+ for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people).
Services available through Support at Home include:
- Domestic assistance
- Personal care
- Clinical and nursing support
- Transport to health appointments
- Social support and companionship
If you have a DVA-accepted mental health condition and receive Support at Home services, your provider may automatically receive extra funding through the Veterans’ Supplement.
Can I receive both DVA and Support at Home services?
Yes, but only if there is no duplication. For example, you could receive transport support through Support at Home and home maintenance through DVA, but you cannot receive domestic cleaning from both programs.
Choosing a provider experienced in coordinating DVA and Support at Home services helps ensure you access the right support from the right program, without confusion or delays.
