Residential aged care facilities (otherwise known as nursing homes or aged care homes) allow seniors to live comfortably whilst receiving comprehensive support with day-to-day needs.
Residents enjoy a private or shared room, chef-prepared meals, housekeeping, facilities for socialising, lifestyle activities, professional 24/7 nursing and medical care.
GET ROOM VACANCIESTo be assessed for residential aged care funding, a person must be aged 65 years or older (50+ years for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people) and be unable to live independently at home.
A potential resident’s financial situation will not impact their eligibility to live in a government-funded aged care facility, but it will impact the amount they may need to contribute to their care.
An ACAT assessment is the first step required to access government-funded aged care;
Many aged care homes are heavily supported by government funding.
Depending on an income and assets assessment, residents may need to pay a Refundable Accommodation Deposit (RAD) which covers the cost of their room.
RADs are negotiated between the facility and resident. The average RAD in Australia is $470,000 but they vary greatly depending on location and facility.
The Basic Daily Care Fee is paid by everyone residing in an aged care facility. This fee is set at 85% of the standard full aged pension. It is not means tested – everyone pays the same Basic Daily Care Fee.
The Basic Daily Care Fee covers day-to-day living expenses including as meals, cleaning, laundry services and administrative costs.
An additional Means-tested Fee is payable, if a resident’s income and assets exceed thresholds set by the Government. The Means-tested fee payable is determined by a potential resident’s income and assets assessment.
Most residential aged care facilities offer extra services such as hairdressing, specialised menus or subscription TV. If a resident wishes to access these extra services, there may be a fee payable. Extra Services Fees are not subsidised by the Government.
Residential respite care involves a short-term stay in an aged care facility or nursing home. Short-term residential respite care presents the opportunity for carers to take a well-earned break.
When you receive residential respite, you will get the same care and support services as permanent residents of the aged care facility, including meals, laundry, and social activities, as well as the care services you need to meet your everyday needs.
The Australian Government will fund up to 63 days of respite care per eligible person per financial year.
The 63-day allocation resets on 1 July each year.
